في مثل هذا الوقت من كل عام، منذ عهد الخديوية وحتى ستينيات القرن الماضي، كانت كسوة الكعبة تصنع سنويا بدار الكسوة في قلب القاهرة التاريخية، تحديدا بحي الخرنفش. ومن هناك يبدأ تحرك الموكب الخاص بها وصولا إلى الحجاز. إلى أن أمر الخديوي إسماعيل بإنشاء كشك المحمل بالدرب الأحمر بجوار دار المحفوظات، فكانت تخرج منه الكسوة بمراسم احتفالية كبيرة إلى الحجاز، وقد ساهم ذلك في تشكيل ذاكرة شفهية ومادية غنية لحي الدرب الأحمر.

نبدأ جولتنا من إحدى بوابات القاهرة، والتي شهدت العديد من الأحداث التاريخية ولا تزال قائمة حتى الآن، خلال الجولة سنمر بـمنطقة الخيامية، الذي لا تزال تحضن فن الخيامية كأبرز الحرف التقليدية في قلب القاهرة التاريخية. ثم ننتقل إلى مسار زيارة الدرب الأحم، ونتعرف سويا على الحكايات المتعلقة به وكيف شهد الحي العديد من الأحداث التاريخية.
بعد الجولة سوف ننتقل لمساحة عمل مشروع شغل تراث لنكمل رحلتنا بورشة الخيامية، بمساعدة سيدات حي الخليفة، لنتعرف على تفاصيل هذه الحرفة ونشهد كيف نستخدم قطع من القماش في سرد حكاياتنا.

Around this time each year, from the Khedival era up until the 1960s, al-kiswa — the cloth that covers the Kaaba — was crafted at the Dar al-Kiswa workshop in the heart of Historic Cairo, specifically in the al-Khurunfish neighbourhood. From there, a ceremonial procession would set off toward al-Hijaz. Later, Khedive Ismail commissioned the Mahmal Pavilion in al-Darb al-Ahmar, next to the National Archives, and from then on, the kiswa would depart from this pavilion in a grand procession on its way to al-Hijaz. This tradition left behind a rich tapestry of oral and tangible heritage in al-Darb al-Ahmar neighbourhood.
Join us on our upcoming tour of al-Darb al-Ahmar to discover this remarkable neighbourhood and explore how its stories have been passed down through generations.
We’ll begin our tour at one of Cairo’s historic gates — a site that has witnessed major events over the centuries and still stands today. As we make our way along the route, we’ll visit the renowned Khiyamiyya district, where this traditional craft continues to thrive in the heart of Historic Cairo. We’ll then explore al-Darb al-Ahmar neighbourhood, uncovering the stories and legends that have shaped the memory of Historic Cairo.
After the tour, we’ll head to the Heritage Workspace for a hands-on khiyamiyya workshop, led by the women of al-Khalifa neighbourhood. We’ll delve into the stories of this traditional craft and discover how fabrics can be used to tell them.
